Check out Steve Burchell's latest report from East Pond, fishing for Perch.
Date:21/08/2024
Peg number: All accessible pegs
Weather: Overcast, brightening up as morning went on Bait: jelly worms, small lures and spinners Set Up:1.7mt ultra light spinning rod and closed faced reel, 6lb line.
Time: 06:00
Spent approx ten minutes in each peg. Fishing along the bank edge seemed to work better, bouncing the jelly worm along the lake bed, did produce the odd take, but mainly dragged up branches, swapped over to shallow micro lure, when retrieving the lure hold the rod down and wind in until the rod tip starts to vibrate, this makes sure the lure in working correctly, too slow and the lure won't vibrate. Swapped between lures and spinners and both caught perch, three to four in each peg then they go off, that’s the time to move onto the next peg, miss a couple of takes and they go off, move on again, but make a note of the area and come back to it.
Bites are grabs and the lure stops, don't strike or you'll miss it, just keep winding, then you feel the fish fighting. Spinners vary the retrieving speed, the bites are the same a grab, all lures and spinners are barbed, so I file them off or crush them with pliers, and take a small sharpening stone .
You will lose the odd lure now and again, but the fun makes up for it, there's nothing like watching a perch grab the lure as it comes into the bank,
All the perch were about the same size, but they did make for it in numbers (approx 22 in total) gave up counting.
There are bigger perch in the lake, but none came my way this trip.
Tight Lines
Steve Burchell.
